First off you must address primary and secondary sources differently because primary sources are more reliable while secondary sources aren’t. Another reason is secondary sources are made after the time period. They won’t have all the answers. Important questions to ask yourself while reading a primary source are as follows: Who is the author of the document? Why did they write this document and What do they want us to learn from the document. These questions allow the reader to think deeper about sources as a whole.

It’s important to ask what the document can’t tell us because we might need other sources to complete our understanding. The question what happened is simple but helpful because it lets the reader piece together whether a source is reliable or not.
